Stain quantity depends on coated surface area and the coverage rate of the exact product on the actual wood condition. Instead of embedding a generic gallons-per-deck rule, MAXScanner separates the deck field from optional railing and stair area, multiplies by the selected number of coats, divides by your product-label coverage, and shows both liquid volume and whole-container purchasing quantity.

Example: 400 sq ft deck plus railings
If the deck field is 400 sq ft and railings add 120 sq ft, two coats create 1,040 sq ft of coverage demand before waste. At a label rate of 250 sq ft/gal, the theoretical need is 4.16 gal before any allowance or container rounding.
What the result does not assume
- •Coverage changes with wood species, porosity, weathering, preparation, application method and product chemistry. Use the selected product label or technical sheet rather than a generic web average.
- •The optional railing and stair values are surface areas, not linear feet. Complex balusters often need a direct surface-area estimate or a conservative product-specific allowance.

What coverage rate should I enter?+
Use the coverage range or rate published for the exact product and surface condition. Rough or weathered wood can absorb materially more finish than smooth sealed boards.
Does the calculator include railings automatically?+
No. Enter the paintable railing area separately so a deck without rails is not overestimated and a detailed rail system is not underestimated.
Why show both gallons and containers?+
Coverage math produces a liquid quantity, but products are bought in fixed-size cans or pails. Whole-container rounding shows the practical purchase quantity separately.
