The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Carpet purchasing gets confusing because rooms are measured in feet while many quotes are discussed in square yards. This calculator keeps the measured area, waste-adjusted area and both unit views side by side, then lets you price the result using the unit your supplier actually quotes.

How to use this calculator

1

Enter one to three rectangular room dimensions. Leave unused room rows at zero.

2

Choose a waste allowance based on seams, pattern direction, room shape and installer guidance rather than using a hidden default.

3

Select the pricing unit and enter the supplier price if you want an estimated carpet-only subtotal.

Where people use it

  • Multi-room carpet quantity checks
  • Square-foot to square-yard quote comparison
  • Early budget scenarios before an installer measure

Example: 12 × 15 ft bedroom

A 12 × 15 room is 180 sq ft, or 20 sq yd. With 10% waste the planning area becomes 198 sq ft, which is 22 sq yd before any roll-width or pattern-layout adjustment.

What the result does not assume

  • Broadloom roll width, seam placement, pile direction and pattern matching can make the installed purchase quantity larger than a simple area estimate.
  • This page estimates area and optional material cost; underlay, transitions, installation and removal are separate.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in a square yard?+

Exactly 9 square feet equal 1 square yard.

Does this optimize carpet roll layout?+

No. It provides an area-based planning quantity. A roll/seam layout can require additional material.

Can I price by square yard?+

Yes. Choose square-yard pricing and the calculator uses the waste-adjusted square-yard quantity.

Keep the result connected to the real job

MAXScanner keeps the formula and assumptions beside the result so you can verify the number before using it in a drawing, estimate, specification, worksheet or document. Where a supplier, manufacturer, drawing or applicable standard owns a requirement, that source remains authoritative.
