Working
  1. usable rate = 100 × 80/100 = 80 Mbps
  2. Time = 10 × 8000 ÷ 80 = 1,000 s
  3. Ideal 100% time = 10 × 8000 ÷ 100 = 800 s
  4. added by the entered efficiency = 1,000 − 800 = 200 s

How to use this calculator

Estimate how long a file or dataset takes to download after converting bytes to bits and applying a usable-throughput efficiency to the entered connection speed. This keeps advertised Mbps separate from real application throughput.

Step-by-step

  1. Step 1

Enter the file or dataset size in decimal GB.

  2. Step 2

Enter the sustained download line speed in Mbps.

  3. Step 3

Set the usable-throughput percentage and compare the estimate with the ideal time and common speed scenarios.

How the result is calculated

Download seconds = size(GB) × 8000 ÷ (Mbps × efficiency/100).

Common questions

Why is Mbps not the same as MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second while MB/s is megabytes per second. Eight bits make one byte, so 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s before overhead.

Why can a real download take longer?

Wi-Fi conditions, protocol overhead, congestion, the remote server, VPNs, retransmission and storage performance can all reduce sustained throughput.

Does the calculator use GB or GiB?

This owner uses decimal GB: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. Use the File Size Converter when you need to distinguish GB from GiB explicitly.
