The calculation, without hidden assumptions

Small percentages become large dollar differences when they are applied to a growing balance for many years. This calculator runs two scenarios side by side: a reference projection with the gross return you enter, and a fee scenario with an upfront load, an annual percentage fee and an optional redemption charge. The difference is shown as fee drag rather than hidden in a single ending-balance number.

Example: why a 1% annual fee compounds

If two scenarios receive the same contributions and gross return but one loses a percentage of assets to fees every year, its lower balance also has less money available to compound in future periods. The long-run dollar gap therefore includes both fees and foregone growth.

What the result does not assume

  • The model uses a regular monthly timing convention and a simplified percentage-fee model. Actual funds can charge fees, spreads, taxes and transaction costs differently.
  • Projected returns are inputs, not forecasts or guarantees. This calculator does not recommend an investment or fund.

Not exactly. The ending-value gap can include both deductions and the growth those deducted dollars no longer earn.
